alcohol as a sort of anti-depressant?

i'm doing research about comfort food.i noticed that from my observation & also personal approach,many people tend to turn to alcohol when they are depressed or troubled.why?i need to find sources about why and how it helps to comfort, be it scientifically or psychologically.Help is very much appreciated.:)
