Help with Latin family motto- Fortis ceu leo fidus

In researching the coat of arms that was given to an ancestor of my husband's family there are two mottos that have come up: Fortis ceu lec fidus; Fortis ceu leo fidus. I would think that leo would be correct since two lions appear on the shield. I am not sure exactly what this phrase means. Could someone please help me with a translation?
