Although maybe not as extreme - I have lived this live style to varying degrees. First you should NOT feel bad about being concerned. He is living a lifestyle that ultimately is going to create problems for him. For example, another DUI is probably not that far off. There is a statistic that once you have one DUI you're more likely to get another. Once you get 2 the chance of having a 3rd one goes up to like 85-90%!!! Its obviously creating problems in your relationship already as well.

Secondly, he has to be honest with himself. He has to see the extreme use of alcohol lessens the enjoyment of life. I've been there. Day after day of feeling like crap, regretting things you did, or not achieving your goals or pursuing the things you enjoy. Until he takes an honest look at himself and wants to help himself I sincerely do not think there is much you can do. He is in denial.

Lastly, he has to see that he can have more fun going out and have a better life by drinking alcohol in moderation. If he is using alcohol for the reasons you described he can continue to do so. He doesn't however need to drink himself into a puddle everytime. Why not go out and have 3 or 4 beers during the week rather than 8 to 10? You ask him this question next time he gives you his reasons for drinking - it is tough to justify.

Good luck.
