Laus Deo

On the aluminum capstone of the Washington Monument is the phrase Laus Deo. Everything I read about the monument says Laus Deo means "Praise be to God" and every on line translator says Praise God is Laus Deus. Can somebody please tell which is correct and how to pronounce it phonetically?
