Maybe looking at it too much but....If you combined some characteristics of the creatures on the Hogwarts crest you might get something resembling a dragon - the ferocity of the lion, the reptilian similarity to the serpent, the wings and claws of the eagle and the dwelling underground (or in a cave (sett?) of the badger.
The motto is similar to that adopted by Bilbo in the Hobbit - '“Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!” he said to himself, and it became a favourite saying of his later, and passed into a proverb.'
I guess if it's bad to laugh at them it must be ten times worse to tickle them.
