Of course, 'serpent' may be a good alternative, but in the case of the school motto, 'dragon' would seem to be more appropriate - it implies that the united school houses would be like a sleeping dragon that enemies would be rash to meddle with. Rather like the 'sleeping giant' referred to after Pearl Harbour.
In the sense of the Harry Potter books, to use 'serpant' would give the motto a colloquial translation something akin to "Don't go upsetting powerful evil enemies". From a Machiavellian standpoint, good, sound advice, but hardly inspiring stuff!
