Discussion of Alcoholism
Re: Alcohol-induced temporary schizophrenia?

Dear Dr. Dodes, my sister-in-law and I are trying to research what really happened to my brother. On July 11 he fell/jumped out a second story window and broke his neck. Leading up to this accident, he had been drinking, perhaps all night. My sister-in-law is not sure what time he actually went to bed, the accident happened at 5 a.m. Everyone seems to think this was caused by "night terrors" and my sister-in-law has said that there were times when he drank he would go to sleep and then wake up appearing to be hallucinating or having a nightmare. It ONLY happened if he had been drinking heavily and fall asleep. There have been other strange behaviors as well, for example he appeared convinced he was a "sniper" for an unknown agency and couldn't talk about it. Otherwise, he held down a job, etc. In fact, while sober he appeared completely normal. When confronted sober about the "sniper" story he said it was true but didn't want to talk about it. When he went through the window, he first punched a hole through the window and then went through the lower portion of the window [as if he dove], screen, venetian blinds and everything. We wanted an opinion about alcohol-induced schizophrenia versus night terrors. Thank you so much for your time. We really appreciate it. Vicki Johnson vickidjohnson@msn.com
