Discussion of Alcoholism

Hi Jill, as you've visited here most recently perhaps you will see my reply--I have recently begun to experience the same symtpoms following a drink of beer/wine(one or two glasses and when it wears off, and the next day or two, POW I am a nutter). I don't drink too much cuz I am a thin build, and it gets boring to me after a while so chronic drinking is not for me either. Last year I damaged a major nerve in my head. Since then I have been in heck, panic attacks induced by physical over-exertion, alcohol/sugar/caffeine sensitivity, extreme mental fatigue following heavy emotions like excitement or anger, you name it.
But the alcohol thing with the paranoia surprised me. I went to see the doctor here in the UK where I live, and they were perplexed. I am seeing an OSTEOPATH for my skull/nerve and they didn't seem to know either. I went to see an herbalist cuz I am a freelance herbal practitioner and wanted to see a pro--I saw the chairman of the Association of Master Herbalists UK who works here in Cambridge where I live 184 Mill Road +441223 212744. He recommended Skullcap Flower herb St John's Wort, Valerian, Lemon Verbena and others. He'd heard of alcohol sensitivity of this type before. These are all sedatives and relaxants and seem to help but ***Skullcap flower herb is a powerful nervine and is an acknowledged antidote to paranoia induced by withrawal from benzodiazapines (valium, diazapam, Xanax,) which I have used successfully. It shoud be used with caution as should St Johns and another, called Valerian. Valerian and Skullcap can, when taken in a dose greater than you need induce the stuff you're trying to get rid of, but I can tell you it works for me --Skullcap I mean-- with the alcohol thing (try 1/2 tsp steeped for ten minutes in hot water--don't boil and swallow three or four gulps at first and then more after 25 mins if nothing but be slow abot it cuz I have overdone it and it is a crap feeling it induces if so). Or quit drinking. I still drink once a month or so, just a wee bit.
I am glad to see so many people have had this happen as it is fightening when you are an otherwise sound and healthy person. I am not so good at resarch so if anyone sends me an email with info, you're welcome.
Please look up Skullcap herb. The proviso about dosage reaction is not often mentioned, same as valerian, so be aware. Books are better than the internet when it comes to herbs, so go to the library. Always check at least two of three book is my rule.
