What a relief it is to find out I'm not alone. My father has been an alcoholic for 10 years. He's only 67 years old. In the last 4 years his health has really detereorated with a mini-stroke, broken hip, etc, all while he continued to drink. He has been through detox 3 times. After breaking his hip, he was in assisted living for awhile, but seemed ready to come home because he wasn't drinking. Since being home, he has started drinking again. He lives alone, although he has a caregiver. Since he began drinking again, the dementia has become even more pronounced. Long term memory is good. Short term memory is horrible. He makes up stories that he absolutely believes are true. He is incredibly paranoid. Calls the FBI and CIA about the terrorists plots. Calls the police about "boogie-men" at his back door. He is very irritable and angry all the time. Calls me 20 + times a day. The problem now is what to do with him. He's so irritable caregivers can't take it anymore. He's not safe to live at home alone. Assited Living places won't want an irritable, paranoid, dementia resident who is also an alcoholic. He will cause such a disruption, they will want him gone. If I bring him home with me (another state) he can't get up and down the stairs to a bathroom and bedroom. Not to mention the impact it would have on my husband and three little kids. What do I do ? Where can he go ? Help.
