My aunt Linda has been an alcoholic for as long as I can remember. She is 57 years old. It has become progressively worse I would have to say over the past 8 years. But even through these last years she has been able to hold a job and keep an apartment. She was what we called a "functioning drunk". She always had her thermos of vodka with her. Without it she could not function.
Recently she had an accident and fell out of the shower. The paramedics called it an alcohol induced seizure. While in the hospital on life support they also found that she ingested some type of paint thinner.She was on a respirator for about a week and a half. She had to be strapped down for quite a few days because she was so aggitated.
She now sits in a mental ward of a Florida hospital waiting to be put into a nursing home.She does not know where she is and has no recollection about much of anything. She looks like a lost and scared little child.The doctors and nurses can't believe that before this happened she was a functioning human being.
I knew that one day her alcohol abuse would get the best of her. I did not imagine she would spend the rest of her days in a home if she dous not progress mentally. I don't know what the prognosis is but I will be there for her as much as I can. I hope for the best.
