My husband, 55 years old, was tentatively disgnosed with Korsakof's. He is an alcoholic. He drank heavy from 18yrs old to 26 yrs, when he quit drinking cold turkey. He started drinking again at 45 and the drinking became greater and greater over time. Two and one half months ago we found him on the bathroom floor and admitted him to the hospital. He was diagnosed as having alcohol induced dementia. He was sent to a rehab center for the drinking. They kept him for one month then sent him home saying he did not have the mental capacity to participate in the treatment program. We kept him at home but he was paranoid, anxious and we were afraid he would hurt himself or someone else so we took him back to the hospital and are currently trying to place him in a secured assisted living home. He can take care of himself, eg. take a shower, eats only a minimum if everyone else is eating, repeats the same questions over and over and cannot remember what he was doing an hour ago more often than not. His long term memory is good. He can give directions to most places in the town where he lived most of his life. He recognizes family members and friends.
My question is "Do you know anyone that has recovered their short term memory losss to such a degree that they became self-functioning again?"
